“Extreme Channel Surfing” is a warp-speed take on pop culture–a wild and very funny look at our national obsession with celebrity “fashion,” pop music, action flicks, late night television, shopping networks, awards shows, headline news…any of the esoterica/minutiae the average U.S citizen must trudge through on any given day in our media-saturated society. When Mack and Jamie take aim at these targets, the two funnymen score bull’s eyes with nearly every shot.

The concept is very clever and very head-spinning, so you will need to listen many times to catch some of the more subtle humorous tweaks. These two gifted comics want us to understand how nimble our minds have become at processing information coming at us fast and furiously.

And funny. When the S&M Diner (“where the waiters smack your lips for you”) segues into the “Time Channel” (“This just in: it’s 3:32 a.m. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It’s really getting late there.”), listeners may realize they’ve seen actual cable channels with programs even more absurd.

“Extreme Channel Surfing” offers a great escape for harried commuters exhausted by the mean-spirited and juvenile routines of morning drive time radio shows or for whom the earnestness and intellectual snobbery of NPR grows tiresome. This is one of the rare comedy recordings that hold up to repeated listening. The production is superb, and Alcroft and Dryden are experts at characterization and dialect. This is modern life flashing before your ears. And it is one wild and crazy trip.
